Our prices are based on market value, cattery supplies & expenses, food & supplements including veterinarian cost. While we do our best to keep costs and prices fair & reasonable, due to rising inflation our Cattery expenses have also significantly increased.
Gender and coloring are factors in pricing, It is much more expensive to spay a female kitten than a male kitten and the price difference reflects that.
Ethically breeding Sphynk kittens is expensive. This is the reason there are so many backyard breeders. We are Ethical Preservation Breeders.
We take pride in our Sire, Dams and Kittens. As their guardians, we honor and treat them with the utmost care, love & attention while ensuring their physical, medical and mental/emotional needs are met.
Our kittens, Sire and Dams health & welfare are our 1st priority. While we can cut cost in some area such as capital costs, it is impossible to reduce funds in operating costs as price increases are beyond our control. We will not sacrifice the quality of dietary & supplement requirements or medical needs due to rising prices.
*Lavender-colored kittens will cost an additional $200.00 for both males & females as the coloring is rare and hard to find.
A $500.00 non-refundable deposit is required when you reserve your kitten. This is applied to the total amount of the kittens' price. A receipt will be issued immediately upon receipt of payment The remaining balance is due the day you take them home.
There are several reasons the deposit is non-refundable. Firstly, when you reserve a kitten you are removing him/ her from the market. This marks them unavailable to others who may have adopted the kitten resulting in a lost adoption. Secondly, our costs increase the longer we have to care for a kitten whose reservation has been cancelled. Thirdly, a considerable amount of work & time goes into fulfilling our services. When you cancel a reserved kitten for any reason, it means we have to duplicate services increasing our workload. In addition, the time between reservation and cancellation is lost pre-bonding time for the kittens' next adoptive family.
No, not at this time
Absolutely! They are often referred to as "Skininfants" for a reason! We highly recommend you research the breed before considering bringing one home. The Sphynx is a high-maintenance breed, unlike a standard, independent, furry house cat. Among a high-quality diet, they require frequent grooming sessions and lots of attention. Because they are hairless, they eat more to regulate their body temperature. What goes in must come out and you'll have to scoop the litter box more frequently and deal with really smelly poops. (It's a Sphynx thing!)
You will need to groom them more on a regular basis i.e. cleaning ears, nail beds, trimming nails, bathing periodically and sponge bathing in between. You will likely have to perform one or more of these tasks 1-2 times a week.
You'll also have to wash bedding, window ledges and anywhere else were they walk or lay on frequently. With no fur to absorb the natural oil cats produce, you'll notice brown smudges on bedding, furniture, and clothing as the oil rubs off on contact. The amount of oil secretion varies from cat to cat. A sponge bath with a soft cloth works to minimize smudges in between their bathing schedule. Sponge bathing also avoids drying out their skin by bathing too frequently. Bathing them too much only compounds the problem leading them to overproduce oil.
With their natural curiosity (always getting into things) and deep attachment to their people (they will follow you around all day) and their almost on demand attention-seeking, combined with the additional work involved to keep them fed, clean and healthy plus cleaning up after them frequently, owning a Sphynx is very much like having a permanent toddler hence the reference to skininfants!
While you can pick your kitten up at the cattery when they are ready to go home, to protect our Cats and kittens from stress and possible infectious viruses we do not allow people to view/visit the kittens in person.
We offer a free complimentary 30-minute Meet & Greet via Facetime or Zoom. Our Meet & Greet allows you to meet us, view the kittens and parents. Its also a good time ask any questions you may have prior to reservation with no pressure or strings attached!
We have also implemented a pre-bonding adoption process which offers bi-weekly services including Update Mondays and one 30-minute every second week Facetime/Zoom session with your reserved kitten.
You can easily book any one of our services by scheduling an appointment online using our website. To book a service use the drop-down menu and click on Online Appointments. You can also cancel and reschedule should you need to right on the website's appointment page.
These measures combined with our website, our reviews from previous adoptive families, a signed contract and our social media presence were all specifically designed to remove fears of being 'scammed', and build trust between us the breeder and you the adoptive family. Our adoption process allows you to be involved in your kittens' growth stages should you choose to utilize our services during the 1st 12 weeks.
We completely understand the hesitation and fear involved when choosing a trusted ethical, preservation breeder and reserving a kitten with a monetary deposit. We went through a few bad experiences while looking for Bhodi & Beebee and were disheartened by the level of sketchy, questionable, and unethical breeders that unfortunately exist out there.
We have done our best to ease the fears that come with adopting a Canadian Sphynx Kitten for individuals and families while protecting our cats & kittens which is our 1st priority.
Preservation breeders are breeding for the protection, future, and safety of sphynx cats & kittens. They have made a commitment to ethical and responsible breeding for the quality, health, and temperament of their cats. They genetically test their Dams and sires before breeding for copies of HCM mutations and they do not breed cats who test 'Positive homogous' no matter how much they have financially invested in the cat. They ensure their kittens are Vaccinated, Dewormed, Spayed/Neutered and are well-socialized. Preservation breeders register their cattery and adhere to best breeding practices set out by TICA or other cat associations. They care about their kittens' health & well-being in their future forever homes and use legally binding contracts to ensure the kittens' best interest & welfare are protected.
(* If your are thinking of adopting one of our kittens please read our HCM page to familiarize yourself with basics of this progressive, cardiac feline disease.)
YES, in addition to annual Health & Wellness Exams, we also genetically test our cats. We know the Canadian Sphynx breed is genetically prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) We LOVE our cats, they are first and foremost our Pets then breeding cats. We strive to breed ethically and believe these tools are invaluable in protecting our much loved cats and their kittens.
What we do at Soul Valley Cattery to: Screen-Detect-Diagnose and Prevent the passing down of HCM to our kittens.
HCM GENETIC TESTING
"One of the most common causes is an inherent disease of the heart muscle itself. This is often related to a genetic predisposition to HCM that is present in the Sphynx breed." (Petmed 2023)
All our Sire & Dams undergo HCM genetic testing. Their results show they are more likely to PRODUCE KITTENS WHO ARE AT A LOWER RISK of developing HCM. You can view their genetic test results including the result explanation for breeding purposes under our "Documents' page.
We test all our cats PRIOR to breeding them. It's our policy to immediately remove a cat who has tested Positive Homozygous from our breeding pool. We monitor cats closely who test Positive Heterogeneous and follow our vets recommendations along with ensuring a complete Health & Wellness exam is performed annually on all our cats.
Sphynx hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) usually does not show up until they are an adult the genetic mutation is present at birth. The age of presentation of disease is variable with many cats developing the disease between 2-3 years of age and some developing it much older (8 -10 years of age). NC State, College of Veterinary Medicine.
Both our Sire & Dams are young, healthy fully vaccinated adults who are actively breeding litters.
None have shown visible symptoms for HCM to date, both our Sire and dams see our licensed vet for Annual health exams with excellent grading on their heart condition to date i.e. no murmurs, no galloping, rhythm, or any other concerns on their 1st & 2nd year exams.
HCM Genetic Testing results
Elle Tested -Negative- This means Elle does not have the genetic mutation for Sphynx HCM and she will not get HCM from the known Sphynx DNA mutation.
Bhodi Tested -Negative This means Bhodi does not have the genetic mutation for Sphynx HCM and he will not get HCM from the known Sphynx DNA mutation.
Beebee Tested -Positive Heterozygous This means that Beebee has 1 copy of the genetic mutation and 1 copy of a normal gene. Beebee is safe to breed with a Negative Testing Sire without the risk of passing down the HCM DNA mutation.
Positive homozygous cats - have 2 copies of the genetic mutation and should not be used for breeding. These cats must be pulled from the breeding pool and spayed or neutered.
Beebee is closely monitored seeing our vet several times a year. She has an annual health & Wellness Exam, Both Bee & Elle receive a maternity health exams every litter including x-ray scan for kitten count and positioning of kittens for safe of delivery.
